HTML5 Now: The Future of Web Markup Today (Part 1 of 2)
This two-part, full-day workshop focuses on HTML5 and why it is becoming more important to understand, and even put to use. As the open standard for web applications, HTML5 takes markup to a new level, requiring web developers and designers to re-examine the way they've worked in the past, and will be working in days and months to come. Presented by Molly E. Holzschlag, Web Standards advocate, evangelist, and developer relations team member at Opera Software, the day helps demystify HTML5 as well as provide actual insight into how to begin using aspects of the language today. This morning portion of the workshop focuses on: the history and evolution of markup, why XHTML has been set aside in favor of HTML5, what role HTML5 plays in the role of sites and applications, demystifying aspects of HTML5 and clarifying its purpose and usage, providing insight into both the HTML and XML notation methods in HTML5, and a range of demos of HTML5 in action in a variety of web browsers.

You say that XHTML has been set aside. But it hasn't. It's part of the HTML 5 spec.

Hi!
The XHTML 2.0 charter ends on December 31st of this year. While HTML5 offers a means by which to deliver XML notation and application+xml, at this time there is no MIME support for XHTML itself.
There are two 'serializations'of markup within the W3C. One is XML, of which XHTML is an application. The other is HTML, of which HTML5 is an application.
The inaccurately named "XHTML5" is the use of XML notation in an HTML5 document which is then delivered using a MIME type of application+xml
XHTML can still be used, of course, when sent as text/html or in XML notation when sent as application+xml.
The notation is there largely as backward compatibility, not as future-oriented really. The idea is that HTML5 remains compatible with existing technologies as well as adding features that assist web developers and designers in significant ways.

HTML5 is not an application of HTML - rather HTML is an application of SGML and HTML5 is the advancement of the HTML markup language into a richer, application-oriented and highly scriptable language.

Hmm... when I see proper CSS3 support in IE, then I might believe they'll support HTML5 sometime in the next decade.

Good information to be up to date on. At this point though, it is probably more prudent to spend time making sure that your web design is working on all the browsers that are out there now. Just my opinion.

Molly....would like to attend both workshops but our flight comes in at 9:40am. If we arrived by 10:30am or even just attended the afternoon would we be incredibly lost or would you have handouts to help us catch up?

@berry -i almost gave up including ie in my design/development until a rather piecemeal, but promising ie8 came along :| ho-hum... ;|
