I am absolutely stoked that people in a position to make a difference are FINALLY addressing this.
I also think that real work needs to be done to allow perfect human-verified transcripts to be automatically fitted to audio and video and then hand tweaked, where necessary.
This also leads to things like the desire for more of a 'the truth is in the file' approach to be present for subtitle tracks for anything that has audio - video included, naturally.
It similarly leads to the desire to have an automated system for tracking all versions of a given piece of media, organising them in a hierarchy of quality to locate the source or master copy, and comparing subtitle information across them all - compensating for timing differences, cuts, etc.
In cases where a video or audio clip is sampled in another presentation, it becomes interesting to discover what conversations are being built around those samplings of the media and analyse them for similarities or trends.
Imagine a world where every single letter or even spaces between words in a transcript functions as a hyperlink to that point in the audio track.
Imagine the audio, having been synchronised to the text of a transcript, now flowing back into the visualisation of the text: whether through spacing, size, emphasis, or other means of differentiation. Imagine that you can edit the timing of the audio track or video, simply by editing that rich visualisation of that text.
