Cloud Computing Economies of Scale
High-scale cloud services provide economies of scale of five to ten times over small-scale deployments, and are becoming a large part of both enterprise information processing and consumer services. This talk details the costs, and cost advantages, of high-scale, cloud services. We begin with an inventory of the infrastructure costs, tracking power distribution and losses from 115kV at the property line through all conversions into the data center to final delivery at semiconductor voltage levels. We then look at the mechanical systems responsible for transporting heat from the servers through to heat dissipation outside of the data center. We conclude with a detailed discussion of cloud computing cost advantages.

OK, I'm sold. Cloud FTW. But what are the counter arguments? Security concerns, I guess, would be number one. Anything else?

Yes. Security concerns are on top of the list for the lack of adoption of Cloud services along with Data integrity issues. Regardless of that this paradigm is here to stay. The benefits overwhelm the disadvantages.

Very interesting presentation.
The 13% power savings shown on page 5 appears to be from older servers released in 2006-2007. The power savings between having a server off and having it sitting at an idle state would be lower for newer servers that implement things like higher power saving CPU C-states and power supplies with increased efficiencies at light loads (e.g. 80Plus Gold). Therefore, considering newer servers makes the areas of focus in the presentation stronger (i.e. smoothing out the sinusoidal nature of the workload).
For the power losses shown on page 9, I find it more compelling to start inside the server and, for a given workload, work back towards the main power feed. In this manner, you can show how small improvements in server efficiency cascade to large power savings at the main feed when all the inefficiencies are considered.
On the UPS efficiency, can the double conversion loss be eliminated with a flywheel UPS? How many datacenters have you seen implement a flywheel UPS?
